***** Ankara Onkoloji Hastanesi 5.Cerrahi Kliniği Şefi, ANKARA Objective: Although there exists a great interest in intraoperative irradiation, its effects on anastomotic healing is still contraversial. In this experimental study, we investigated effects of intraoperative irradiation on the anastomotic wound healing on rats.Institution: Ankara Oncology Hospital Materials and Methods: 90 male, Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into two groups. In group 1(n=40), after ileum resection, an end to end anastomosis was performed. In group 2 (n=50), after anastomosis, the ileum segment was irradiated intraoperatively with 2000 cGy. On the 3rd and the 7th postoperative day rats were sacrificed and anastomotic segments were removed to evaluate bursting pressures and hydroxyproline levels. Results: Seven rats died from radiotherapy induced ileus. Either on the 3rd or the 7th days the bursting pressure and hydroxyproline results of the irradiated group were significantly lower than the control group (p<0.05).Conclusion: According to these mechanical and biochemical evaluation, we can say that intraoperative irradiation impairs the anastomotic healing in rat ileum anastomosis. Keywords: Intraoperative irradiation, Anastomosis, Wound healing.Turkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:148-151
