Engin GÜNEY*
*Yrd.Doç.Dr., Adnan Menderes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Endokrinoloji BD, AYDIN Hirsutism is defined as the presence of terminal hairs in females in a male-like pattern. It is a common health problem, and it is the manifestation of various disorders. Common causes of hirsutism are polycystic ovary syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (late-onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency), idiopathic hirsutism, drugs and tumors. When a woman was evaluated as hirsute, differential diagnosis is necessary. In addition to history and physical examination, laboratory evaluation and if necessary, imaging techniques should be used. Measurement of serum testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, androstenedione, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, cortizol and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels is useful in laboratory evaluation. Keywords: HirsutismTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:94-100
