Material and Method: Between 1990-2000, 61 patients underwent operation with the diagnosis of mediastinal masses were reviewed; specifications of patients and operations were recorded. Results: Mean age was 38.2 ± 20.3 (15-71) years, and male/female ratio was 1.44. Most frequent localisation was anterosuperior mediastinal region. Resected masses was found 7.8 ± 5.2 cm in mean diameter. There were tumoral lesion in 51 (83.6%) and cystic lesion in 10 (16.4%) of patients. Number of benign lesions was 33 (64.7%, 33/51) and malings were 18 (35.2%, 18/51). Resection was incomplete in 8 (13.1%) of patients. All had malign lesions, thus complete resection ratio in malign tumors was 55.6% (10/18). Minor complication ratio was 4.9% and causes were wound infection 1, diaphragma elevation 1 and atelectasis 1. Recurrence occurred in one (1.6%) patient. Survival rate was 72.2% in follow up period. Conclusion: Surgical approach must be considered preferentially in mediastinal masses. Keywords: Mediastinum, Neoplasms, CystsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:33-37
