****Prof. Dr., Dicle Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göğüs Kalp ve Damar Cerrahisi AD, DİYARBAKIR Aim: Exploring the effectiveness of metilprednisolone to prevent Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) experimentally. Material and Method: Three groups included 7 rabbits each. First group (control) was given saline (NaCl 0.9%), oleic acid additionally to second group and plus metilprednisole to third group. Values of blood gases, mean arterial pressures and heart rates were recorded. Leucocytes were counted in bronchoalveolar lavage and at peripheral blood. Wet and dry weight of lung were measured. Hemorrhage and patological lesions of lungs were evaluated relative to grading system by light microscope. Results: PaO2 was 85.7 ± 22.3 at control group, 58.6 ± 11.2 at oleic acid group and 66.3 ± 10.2 mm Hg at metilprednisole group. Other parameters were follows respectively. PaCO2; 34.2 ± 3.4, 41.4 ± 2.5 ve 40.3 ± 1.9 mmHg. Heart rate; 101.7 ± 11.3, 75 ± 8.8 and 79.2 ± 12.2 1/dk. Rate of wet/dry weight of lung; 4.5 ± 1.3, 6.1 ± 0.8 and 5.7 ± 0.7. Leucocyt number in bronchoalveoler lavage; 2.3 ± 0.3, 9 ± 0.4 and 3.8 ± 0.8x105/ml. Peripheral leucocyt number; 7100 ± 500, 3600 ± 785 ve 3800 ± 525. While no grade 3 hemorrhage was present at metilprednisole group, 28.6% hemorrhage was occurred at oleic asit group. Severe pathological lesions were 29% at oleic acid group and 14.2% at metilprednisole group. Conclusion: Metilprednisole has a limited positive effect on treatment of oleic acid-mediated Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Keywords: Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Adult, MethylprednisoloneTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:23-26
