Etiologic And Surgical Evaluation Of 476 Patients With Pressure Sores

Plastik ve Rekonstrüktif Cerrahi Kliniği, ANKARA Purpose: Since pressure sores do not respond well to the conservative treatment modalities, have the atonic wound characteristics that need a long healing period, and the negative psychological effect on the patients, these factors are all effective on the application to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Clinics. We investigated the patients treated for the pressure sores in our clinic for the etiology, age groups, pressure sore regions, sugical procedures, surgical complications and re-operations in this study. Material and Method: 476 patients with pressure sores who apllied to or followed up by our clinic between 1990-2001 were investigated for the etiology, age groups, pressure sore regions, sugical procedures, surgical complications and re-operations in this study. Findings: The age of the 476 patients, 119 female and 375 male, followed up by our clinic were between 1 and 79. Trauma history was obtained mostly in the etiology. Sacral region was the mostly encountered region.There were 42 multiple pressure sores in 476 patients. The size’s were between 1x2 cm and 21x26 cm. The surgical techniques were applied according to the age, condition of the pressure sores, gains of the patients. Skin graft loss in 7, partial flap necrosis in 19, total flap loss in 2, wound dehiscence in 7, re-occurence of pressure sores in 13, and hematoma formation underneath the flap were encountered as the complications. Results: Sacral pressure sores were mostly encontered in 476 patients.
