The Socio-economic Levels Of The Students Who Preferred Uludag University Medical Faculty In 2001

Objective: To assess the socio-economic levels of families of students who have admitted to Uludağ University Medical Faculty in 2001 and to investigate whether their socio-economic level is a factor that affects their school preferences. Material and Methods: Study group enrolled all 1st year students of Uludağ University Medical Faculty. 57% (n:124) of study group (n.219) were male and 43% were female (n:95). Results were classified on a pre-defined Socio-Economic Status scale and data were analyzed by SPSS 9.0 statistical program. Findings: 74% of mothers of students were housewives and 26% were working. Education levels of mothers were as follows: 39% elementary school graduate; 8% secondary school graduate; 24% high-school graduate; 14% university graduate and 15% were illiterate. 23% of fathers were high-rank officials, 15% workers, 15% self-employed, 14% tradesmen, 33% from other occupation groups. Education levels of fathers were as follows: 22% elementary school graduate, 9% secondary school graduate, 28% high-school graduate, 38 % university graduate, 3% were illiterate. 74% of students were living at their own houses and 26% rented. Socio-economic status of students was as follows: 43 % had high; 35% moderate; 14% had very high; 7% low and 1% very low. Conclusion: We found that most students choosing our medical faculty came from families of high and moderate socio-economic level. We believe that comprehensive studies are needed to determine the effects of socio-economic level on preferred faculty. Obtained statistical data will shed light on new studies.
