Material and Method: In this study we include 38 male blue-collar workers employed in asphalting for 17± 6 year and 30 male white-collar workers for 14±5 years. At the end of the asphalting season (between July and September), the workers went through a general check-up. 5ml of blood was taken from the left arm arteria radialis of those who were found to be in good health condition. From the blood samples taken, PO2, PCO2, O2Saturation% (O2Sat%), pH, HCO3 and base excess (BE) parameters were studied. The findings of the blue and white-collar workers included in the study were evaluated with non-paired student test. Results: The PO2 values between the blue and white collar-workers were found to be significant (P<0.05). This difference was lower in blue-collar workers. The difference in PCO2 and pH values between the two groups were not found to be statistically significant (P> 0.05). When the levels of O2 Sat%, HCO3, and BE were compared with one another, the difference was significant in favor of the blue-collar workers (P< 0.05).Conclusion: Although we did not see any significant change in pH and PCO2 values of the blue-collar workers, the values of PO2, HCO3, O2 Sat% and BE decreased significantly. Keywords: Blood Gas Analysis, AsphaltTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2003, 23:1-4
