Pain, numbness, burning and tingling sensation are symptoms of diabetic neuropathy, which influence quality of life seriously. In this study, we examined venlafaxine, a new antidepressant drug, for efficacy and safety on diabetic neuropathy symptoms. Material and Method: Twenty-three diabetic patients, whose ages were ranged between 40 and 76 (mean: 56.6±2.2) were screened. Michigan Diabetic Neuropathy questionnaire was performed once at baseline and three months thereafter. Venlafaxine 75 mg/day was iniated and efficacy were assessed according to the change in symptom score in three months of treatment. Results: Baseline symptom score was 8.5±0.7 and 5.2±0.8 after therapy (p<0.05). The difference between first and last score was statically significant. The symptom score changed more than 50% in 43.5 % of patients and no change in 26.1% of patients. The difference between baseline and last symptom severity score was significant in moderate and severe diabetic neuropathy groups. Side effects were noted in five patients but these were not severe to give up drug. Conclusion: Venlafaxine was found to be effective and safe. Further controlled studies are needed to clarify. Keywords: Diabetic neuropati, Venlafaxine, TreatmentTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:119-123
