In our study, we aimed to compare the cardiovascular effects, the undesired side effects and postoperative recovery time and quality of midazolam during anesthesia induction with thiopenton in patients undergoing gynecological laparoscopic surgery.Fourty female patients undergoing laparoscopy were included in our study. Patients were randomised into two groups as there were 20 patients in each group. After precurarisation with atracurium, anesthesia induction was performed by 0.2 mg/kg midazolam in the first group and 5mg/kg thiopenton in the second group. Entubation was done after 2mgr/kg fentanyl and 1.5 mg/kg succinylcholin in both of the groups. 33 %O2 + 67 %N2O + 0.5-1% halothane were used for the anesthesia maintenance. Ciliar reflex loss, systolic arterial pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), undesired side effects of the agents, entubation comfort, recovery times of the patients were noted. Ciliary reflex loss time was longer in midazolam group compared when with thiopenton. SAP, DAP, MAP and HR reached to peak values after 1st and 2nd minutes of entubation in two groups. There wasn’t any difference in recovery times beetween the groups. We concluded; that midazolam is a safe agent in outpatient anesthesia for induction. Keywords: Midazolam, Consciousness, orientation, AnesthesiaTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:557-561
