Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE); a component of the renin-angiotensin system has an important role in the regulation of blood pressure and converts Angiotensin I to Angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor. Zinc (Zn), one of the trace elements in the human body, has important biological functions and has been found in the catalytic site of many enzymes including ACE. The aim of this research is to evaluate plasma ACE activities, plasma and erythrocyte Zn concentrations in the hypertensive diabetic individuals. It has been investigated whether there is any difference between the values obtained for these parameters in the hypertensive diabetics compared to the normotensive diabetic individuals, the control group. In this study, the plasma ACE activities, plasma and erythrocyte Zn levels of twenty-three hypertensive diabetic and twenty-five diabetic individuals were evaluated. In the hypertensive diabetic individuals, plasma ACE, Zn and erythrocyte Zn values were 61.4 ± 5.3 U/L, 9.4 ± 0.4 mol/L ,123.5 ± 5.0 mol/L respectively; in the diabetic individuals these values were found as 43.8 ± 4.6 U/L,12.6 ± 0.6 mol/L,139.5 ± 6.0 mol/L.It was concluded that while ACE activities in hypertensive diabetics were significantly higher than diabetic individuals, plasma and erythrocyte Zn levels were lower than those in the control group. Keywords: Diabetes Complications, (ACE)Peptidyl-Dipeptidase A, ZincTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:553-556
