Ubiquitin covalently attaches to target proteins with the help of ubiquitin activating enzyme (E1), ubiquitin conjugating enzyme (E2), and recognizing protein (E3). Polyubiquitinylated proteins are than (recognized and) degraded by the 26S proteasome. Ubiquitin-mediated degradation of regulatory proteins plays important roles in the control of cell cycle progression, signal transduction, transcriptional regulation and apoptosis. Ubiquitin may additionally be involved in the pathogenesis of various diseases, determination of ubiquitin forms in human serum could be important to find possible clinical applications. Keywords: Ubiquitin, Proteasome Endopeptidase Complex, Radiation, IonizingTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:616-619
