** Doç.Dr., Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Klinik Biyokimya BD, İZMİR The prothrombin time is one of the most important laboratory tests to determine the functionality of the blood coagulation system. It is used in patient care to diagnose diseases of coagulation, assess the risk of bleeding in patients undergoing operative procedures, monitor patients being treated with oral anticoagulant therapy, and evaluate liver function. Reporting prothrombin time results as the International Normalized Ratio (INR) is important to standardize interlaboratory variability caused by the use of different thromboplastin reagents. Even with these improvements, however, a number of factors which affects the results still remain. Keywords: Prothrombin Time, International Normalized Ratio,AnticoagulantsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:597-601
