A Case Report With Reye Syndrome Followed In Intensive Care Unit

Reye’s syndrome (RS), which is uncommon, but is still an important encephalopathy characterized with vomiting, aura, convulsions, hypoglycemia, metabolic acidosis and fatty degeneration of the viscera. It has been considered that viral infections such as influenza or varicella, salycilate, antiemetic drugs, aflatoxins, extrensic toxins such as insectisides take part in the development of RS.Increase in the levels of serum hepatic enzymes (GOT,GPT) and ammonemia, brain- edema without inflammation, microblisteral fattnes in liver, mitocondrial anomaly in cerebral neurons are patognomonic.The purpose of this study was to describe and discuss a 5 years old patient with Reye's syndrome in intensive care unit who had increase in the levels of serum hepatic enzymes and creatinin phosphokinase, hyperammonemia, convulsion and metabolic acidosis.Keywords: Reye Syndrome, Intensive care unitsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:589-592
