Our Experience And Complications Of Tissue Expansion

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate retrospectively our tissue expander experience and the complications. Materials-Methods : Between 1997-2000, tissue expanders were applied to 45 patients. 27 of the patients were male and 18 were female. Tissue expanders were used in 3 of the patients for congenital ear anomaly, 2 with postmastectomy defect, 7 with congenital melanocytic nevus, 23 for burn scar and in 7 patients with soft tissue defect secondary to trauma.Results: Except from the successful cases, 3 of the cases had hematoma, one had seroma, 3 of the patients tissue expander was exposed and 2 had infection.Conclusion: In our patients with head and neck and extremity tissue expander appliances most common complications were found to be infection, tissue necrosis, and exposure of the tissue expander.Keywords: Tissue expansion, ComplicationsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:168-172
