* Dr., Dr.Sami Ulus Çocuk Hastalıkları Hastanesi Anestezi Bölümü, ANKARA Objective: In this study the efficacy of the Mallampati test, which is used for estimating the difficult intubation in children was evaluated. Material and Method: Four hundred cases 5-12 year old undergoing elective surgery were included in the study. Age, gender, body weight, body height were noted preoperatively. The pharyngeal structures were examined before the operation. At the time of intubation, laryngoscopic evaluation was performed according to the Cormack-Lehane’s laryngoscopic classification. Results: Incidence of difficult intubation was 4 % in all cases. Mallampati scoring were class 4 in 4 %, class 3 in 21%, class 2 in 25 % and class 1 in 50 % of the cases. According to the Cormack-Lehane’s laryngoscopic scoring 1 % of the cases were in class 3, 4 % in class 2 and 95 % class 1 (correlation coefficient:0.32). Conclusion: These results revealed that, Mallampati test did not offer additional advantage for estimating difficult intubation preoperatively. Keywords: Intubation, ChildTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:484-486
