Polymorphonuclear leucocytes or neutrophils (PMNs) which are one type of leucocytes which contains specific granules, differentiated lysosomes and pharmacologically active agents may provide adjusting the intensity of inflamed events and defend parasitic helminthes with the aid of bacterial phagocytosis. Neutrophilia which develops dependently to bacterial infections can be seen due to enhancement at PMNs developing. It has been shown that PMNs play a very important role in the mechanism of ulcerogenesis. In order to investigate these possible structural changes, the PMNs which were found at the gastric mucosa in cases with gastric ulcer were examined at the electron microscopic level.During the study, biopsies obtained from fundic mucosa of the stomach by gastroscopy from patients whom had gastric ulcer, were fixed in %2.5 glutaraldehyde and then after post fixed in %1 OsO4 which were embedded in the Vestopal W.Ultrathin sections were examined in a JEOL 100C electron microscope.During the examination large numbers of PMNs both accompanied with granules(gPMN) and degranulated (dPMN) which were placed among the glandular epithelial cells of the fundic mucosa were coincided. There were generally two classified types of granules variable in various shapes and large quantities in the cytoplasm of the gPMNs. These were small in diameters differently shaped specific granules and larger in their diameters, round shaped azurophilic granules. The dPMNs were containing small and few azurophilic granules and large quantities small vesicles, vacuoles and lysosomes. In conclusion, PMNs which were located at the gastric mucosa in cases with gastric ulcer ,particularly when the degranular (dPMN) type of their structural properties were considered, it has been convinced that they were active at the phagocytic phase in order to eliminate the harmful factors of the tissue which had been ruined.
