** Prof.Dr., Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp.Fakültesi Histoloji ve Embriyoloj AD, ANKARA Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) is a mitogenic polypeptide that binds to the EGF receptors and regulates a variety of a cellular processes. EGF makes its activitiy by binding to its receptors on the cell surface. We aimed in this study to examine the distribution of EGF receptors in adult pancreas and newborn pancreas by immunohistochemistry under the light microscope. Tissues were obtained by surgical operations and autopsies at Gazi University Hospital.Tissues samples were fixed in neutral formaline. The avidin – biotin tecnique with polyclonal antibodies was performed to demostrate EGF-R localisation in these tissues.Exocrine pancreas and pancreatic islets showed EGF receptor immunocreactivity while pancreatic ducts were nonreactive in the adult pancreas. However, connective tissues which were around the pancreatic ducts showed positive immunostaining. In newborn pancreas, EGF receptor immunostaining resembled to those observed in the adult pancres but, a slightly stronger stainning in Langerhans islets. This result was related with the maturation of Langerhans islets after birth. Keywords: Pancreas, Epidermal Growth Factor, ImmunohistochemistryTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:471-478
