Pleurodesis With Polidocanol In Rabbits (experimental Study)

**** Prof.Dr., GATA Göğüs Cerrahisi AD, ANKARA Objective : Pleurodesis is widely recommended in patients with recurrent spontaneus pneumothorax and recurrent pleural effusions. Polidocanol has a potent sclerosant effect on varicose veins. The purpose of this present study was to determine the effect of polidocanol over the intact pleura in rabbits.Institution: Gülhane Military Medical Academy Research and Development Center.Materials and Methods : Thirty New Zelland White Rabbits were subjects of this study. The rabbits were divided in to three groups. 2% 2 ml polidocanol was administred into the pleural cavity in first group (Group I, n=13). Oxytetracycline 2 ml was administered in second group (Group II, n=13), and 0.9% NaCl solution was used in control group (Group III, n=4). Twenty eight days after instillation, animals were sacrified and both pleural cavities were opened by removing sternum. Adhesions were examined and specimens were collected from lung and parietal pleura for histopathologic examinations.Results: An adequate pleural fibrosis was obtained in both group. Macroscopic adhesions and microscopic fibrosis between pleural layers were similiar in the first and second group (p=0.52).Conclusion: Polidocanol may be an useful agent for creating fibrosis in pleura.Keywords: Pleurodesis, Polidocanol, Pneumothorax, Pleural Effusion, MalignantTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:466-470
