** Prof.Dr., GATA Biyokimya ve Klinik Biyokimya AD, ANKARA With the recently growing concern metabolism and biochemical characteristics of magnesium have been investigated in details. Technological innovations have also improved the measurement of magnesium ion. Magnesium is the 4th cation within the body and the second in intracellular medium with respect to the concentration. Magnesium plays a vital role in a wide range of areas; from the transport of calcium and potassium ion to signal transport, from energy metabolism to cell proliferation. Intracellular magnesium is 10 times greater than found in extracellular space therefore, serum total magnesium is not an indicator of magnesium found in the body. On the contrary, ionized magnesium is essential since it can be diffused into the cell and is the functional form in the body. Magnesium concentrations can be different in each tissue, but increased levels can be found in those with higher metabolic activity. Methods for the measurement of magnesium can be classified into 3 groups as those of serum, tissue and intracellular free magnesium. Measurement of magnesium and their possible application will than be discussed. Keywords: Magnesium, Measurement, metabolismTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:530-534
