The purpose of this report was to present the spectrum of patients that an anaesthesiology department of an unaffected backup hospital may face after a massive disaster. Twenty-seven of 95 earthquake victims who were brought to our hospital were followed by the anaesthesiology department. Nine patients were consulted outside the operating room for central venous cannulations to begin a haemodialysis program. Twenty-four patients, were anaesthetized in the operating room for 60 surgical procedures. Ten patients were followed in the intensive care unit. Most of the patients brought to our hospital were suffering from renal dysfunction. Other than one patient who died in the intensive care unit, all patients recovered to normal renal function. Action plans for disasters must be organized on both the national level and by local hospitals. The anaesthesia team must always be a key aspect of these strategies. Keywords: Natural Disasters, AnesthesiaTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:502-504
