*** Doç.Dr., Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Radyasyon Onkolojisi AD, ANKARA High-grade malignant astrocytomas are the most frequently tumors among adults’ brain tumors, since more than 90 percent of recurrences are seen at the primary tumor site and/or adjacent structures, partial brain irradiation (PBI) is used recently. In this retrospective study, we examined the effects of irradiated volume and other factors like age and histopathology on survival in high-grade gliomas. The study was performed on 45 patients, who recieved radiotherapy (RT). Patients’ age range was between 76 and 25 (mean 53.3) and the ratio of men to women was 16/29. Histopathologic examination was made to 40 patients. The most frequent symptoms were seizures, changes in mental status and headache. Thirty patients had PBI and the other 15 cases received whole brain irradiation (WBI). Cone down boost was given to the primary tumor after 45-50 Gy in 16 of the patients who were administered PBI, 14 of the fifteen patients who were administered WBI. Total doses varied between 40 and 68 Gy (mean 58 Gy). The median survival time all patients were 12 months. The median survival time in patients who were subjected to WBI was 10 months and in those who were subjected to PBI survival time was fourteen months. No statistical difference was observed regarding survival rates between two groups of patients with different radiotherapy fields (p=0.70). Most important variants effecting overall survival were age, performance status and extend of resection. Keywords: Brain Neoplasms, Radiotherapy, GliomaTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:42-46
