***** Prof.Dr., Akdeniz Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Anesteziyoloji ve Reanimasyon AD, ANTALYA Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of midazolam or propofol combined with alfentanyl on hemodynamic and respiratory status, intraocular pressure, and quality of awekening during laryngeal mask (LM) insertion, which is an alternative metod of endotracheal intubation.Material-Methods: Thirty patients aged between 15-65, who had ASA class I-II, underwent short surgery were randomly classified into two groups. For induction patients were given alfentanyl 0.06mg/kg + midazolam 0.3mg/kg in midazolam group, and alfentanyl 0.06mg/kg + propofol 2mg/kg in pro-pofol group. The number of LM insertion attemps, mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulse rate, oxygen saturation, airway pressure, cuff pressure, intraocular pressure, before- during and after the operation were noted. The postoperative awakening quality was evaluated by determining time of eye opening, respiration and orientation. Results: There were no significant difference in the demographic variables and the durations of the surgery among two groups (p>0.05). Patients comfort of LM insertion and the success in the first attempt (by the same person) were higher in P group than M group (p<0.05).The changes in hemodynamic and respiratory status were not significant in both groups.Intraocular pressure changes were not significant in the groups itself and among the two groups. Conclusion: In conclusion, LM can be insert by using propofol and midazolam without administering any muscle relaxant with no changes in hemodynamic and respiratory status and intraocular pressure. Keywords: Laryngeal mask, Propofol, MidazolamTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:373-377
