In the studies conducted through creating Vitamin A deficiency, some developmental malformations including kidney were demonstrated. It was reported that number of fetus glomerulus decreased due to Vitamin A deficiency during pregnancy. In this study, in case of application of high dose Vitamin A, in newborn rats the morphometric change within the number of glomeruls examined and light and electron microscopic examination of renal corpuscle structure was carried out.Material and Methods: Rats were divided into three groups; control, group I (40000 IU/kg) and II (160000 IU/kg) experiment group. Application of medicine (Vitamin A); embryonic 8 day intraperitoneal single dose. Kidneys taken from newborn rats were examined morphologically with the light microscope. Preparations made were followed through routine electron microscope and the fine structure of renal corpuscle considered. In order to show the glomerul rates of control group and the group that Vitamin A applied, semithin cross-sections were dyed with toluidin blue. Results: In these cross-sections, a proportionally apparent increase was detected in the number of glomerules between control group and the rats that Vitamin A applied (26%).Keywords: Retinol Acetate, Microscopy, Electron, KidneyTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:369-372
