The Role Of Glutathione In Antioxidant Mechanism
Yasemin AKSOY*
* Ph.D., Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Biyokimya AD, Öğr.Gör., ANKARA Glutathione which is synthesized within cells, as a tripeptide (glutamic acid, cysteine, glycine) that uses NADPH to provide cells with their reducing power. It occurs in the cell primarily in the reduced form (GSH). Intracellular and/or extracellular conditions that leads to the chemical or metabolic generation of reactive oxygen species (free radicals) is termed oxidative stress. The balance between the oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity determines the susceptibility of a given organ or organ systems. Free radicals which is sourced endogenous and exogenous stress play significant role in the pathogenesis of certain human diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, drug-associated toxicity and viral infections. GSH, antioxidant vitamins (vitamin E, vitamin C) and antioxidant enzymes play an important role in protecting cells against oxidative damage. GSH and GSH precursors has been used to protect antioxidant capability for treatment. Keywords: Glutathione, Oxidative Stress, AntioxidantsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2002, 22:442-448
