Between January 1993-December 1996, 266 patients who applied with indwelling double-J catheter were evaluated in our Department of Urology, School of Medicine, Gazi University. Double-J catheters were principally used before ESWL in 132(49.62%) patients and for stone disease and urological plastic surgery in 104(39.09%)patients during the operation. Although 207 (77.81%) patients have suffered some subjective symptoms, none needed removal of the catheter because of these symptoms. In our 266 cases, 58 patients were evaluated for vesicoureteral reflux. Of these 58 patients, 22(37.92%) of them with double-J catheter have shown vesıcoureteral reflux. Catheter migration, stone formation, fracture of catheter, ureteral perforation and mainly encrustation were the major complications. Most of of these complications (85.71%) were seen after 3 months and this suggests that the patients who might have long standing indwelling catheter, it should be changed within 3 months.
As a conclusion, because of the fact that there is a possibility of some serious complications such as ureteral perforation and catheter fracture, double-j catheter application would not be considered as a simple work.
