Seventy-five outpatients undergoing gynecological laparoscopy were randomly allocated into three groups and were given same standardized premedication and general anesthesia procedures. Droperidol 0.5 mg was administered intravenously in group I, 6 % dextran 0.5 ml was injected to the P6 acupoints in group II approximtely 10 minutes before the end of surgery and nothing was used for preventing emesis in group III. During the first postoperative six hours, patients were observed for nausea and vomiting. When the number of cases with postoperative nausea and vomiting were compared; no statistically significant difference was found among the groups in the incidence of vomiting, but there was a significant difference between group III and the others in the incidence of nausea.
Consequently, 6% dextran injection into the P6 acupoint was found to be effective by providing long term stimulation because of its hiperoncotic effect for preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting.
