Oxygen free radicals are known to make damage in many biological tissues. Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for various diseases. It is possible that oxygen free radicals produced by the activity of polymorphonuclear leucoytes is increased by cigarette smoking. In this study markers of free radical activity (thiobarbituric acid reactivity - malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase) were measured in adult smokers and nonsmoker volunteers. The plasma MDA levels in smoking groups (1.48±0.11 nmol/ml) were higher as compared to non smokers (0.99±0.15 nmol/ml, p<0.01) and erythrocyte SOD levels were not different statistically (p>0.05).
According to these results, the elevated MDA levels can indicate that smoking leads to oxidative changes in biologic molecules in adult smokers.
