Heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is divided into two types. Type I is the mild form of HIT, that occures about 10-30 per cent of patients. There is no complication and the mechanism is the inhibition of adenyl-cylase.
Type II occurs only 0.5-5 per cent, but produces severe morbidity and mortality. After starting heparin therapy, because of immune mechanism, severe thrombocytopenia appears in 6-14 days. The severe form of HIT may be associated with both arterial and venous thrombosis. These thrombotic complications frequently result in serious consequences, such as leg amputation, hemiplegia and can even cause death.
In this report we present a case of HIT type II.
