In recent years, our understanding of the interactions between the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and immune-mediated inflammatory reactions has expanted enormously. Immune system cells can produce neurologically active peptids including ACTH, CRF, growth hormone, thyrotrpin, prolactin, human chorionic gonadotropin, endorphin, enkephalin, substans P, somatostatin and VIP. Cytokines are likely important mediators of the HPA response to immune stimuli. This review otlines the influences that the HHA axis and immune-mediated inflammatory reactions for human disease.
