They effectively reduce plasma cholesterol level and decrease risk of myocardial infarction and stroke. Some authors reported that statins also inhibit platelet aggregation. But, results of these studies are controversial. In this study, we investigated the effect of simvastatin on in vitro platelet aggregation in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia. Eleven adult hypercholesterolemic patients (with or without hypertriglyceridemia) were enrolled in the study (8 female, 3 male; mean age 51.5±5.5 years; total cholesterol 288±37 mg/dL). Simvastatin (10 mg/day) was started to all patients. Blood samples for platelet aggregation and lipid parameters (total cholesterol, HDL-, LDL-, VLDL-cholesterol and triglyceride) were obtained at the beginning of the study and after two months. In vitro platelet aggregation (induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP), collagen and ristocetin) was measured by whole blood impedance aggregometer. Therapy with simvastatin didn’t cause a significant decrease of plasma level of total cholesterol, whereas it reduced level of LDL-cholesterol p=0.009) and increased level of HDL-cholesterol (p=0.03). On the other hand, the change of the parameters of platelet aggregation was not statistically significant. Keywords: Hypercholesterolemia, Platelet aggregation,
