Endemic Goiter And Iodine Deficiency Disordersin The World And Turkey

Iodine Deficiency and related Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) are still important health concerns for the world and Turkey. Enlarged thyroid gland is the most easily recognizable of these disorders due to its visibility and easy physical examination. But more important health problems like abortus, stillbirths and cretinism are present among IDD.
Iodine Status of Turkey is still unknown and iodine prophylaxis is not effective and sustainable. The aim of present review is to emphasize the importance of IDD and attract attention on this vital subject while summarizing the literature in the field.Keywords: Iodine deficiency, Endemic goiterTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 1999, 19:106-113
