** Doç.Dr.,Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi İç Hastalıkları AD, İmmünoloji BD, ANKARA Autoimmune diseases are characterized by inflammation. The causes of these diseases are still unclear. An inciting event such as an infection may trigger a sustained pathologic process mediated by a disregulated immune response in genetically predisposed individuals. Although certain aspects of the immune system of these patients may be hyperactive, protective immunity may function suboptimally. Often the most devastating insult to the immune system results from the treatment of autoimmune disease. Immunization status should be assessed in all patients with autoimmune disorders. We briefly review the various defects in the immune system encountered in patients with autoimmune diseases before addressing the role of immunization as preventive measures in these disorders. Keywords: Autoimmune diseases, Immunity,
