Evaluation Of The Etiology Of The Acute Painful Eye

A number of ocular or nonocular conditions may produce an acutely painful eye or orbit. Most of the patients with acute painful eye can be treated as outpatients. In this study , the etiological factors in patients with acute eye pain who were treated as inpatient, the managements and their results were evaluated retrospectively. With this purpose, 74 eyes of 73 patients with acute pain who attended our clinic between April 1991 and May 1998 have been included in this study. The causes of acute pain were: acute angle closure glaucoma in 43 eyes, keratitis in 15 eyes (herpetic keratitis in 6 eyes , corneal trophic ulcus in 3 eyes, corneal ulcus in 2 eyes , herpes zoster ophthalmicus in 1 eye and disciform keratitis in 2 eyes), acute corneal hidrops in 2 eyes (keratoconus) , acute dacryocystitis in 4 eyes, preseptal cellulitis in 3 eyes , orbital abscess in 2 eyes and anterior uveitis in 5 eyes. The hospitalization period of patients were 6.7 days approximately. (range 3 to 30 days ). The treatment method was surgical and medical in 35 eyes and 39 eyes, respectively . As a result, 63 patients (64 eyes ) with complete improvement and 10 patients (10 eyes ) with decreased pain were discharged. In conclusion, many diseases can be the cause of acute painful eye.
