The Calculation Of Testes Volumeby Stereological Method In The Fetal Period

During the fetal period in fetuses, the testes migrate from the abdomen to the scrotum. The aim of the study was to determine the weight and the volume of the testis during the fetal period. Bilaterally 26 testes taken from 14 human fetuses without congenital abnormalities and aged between 27 and 40 weeks were studied. The gestational ages of the fetuses were evaluated in regard to crown-rump-length. The testis volume is calculated by stereological method. Testicular parameters (weight, volume) were measured during the fetal period. Significant correlation was found between testicular parameters and gestational ages (p<0.001). The testes had not descended to scrotum in any fetus until 27 weeks. The testes descended to the scrotum were found in fetuses aged between 33 and 40 weeks. No difference was found between the position and parameters of the right testes and left testes (p>0.05). In this study we believe that our study will contribute to the studies to be carried on morphological structure as it gives information about testis weight and testis volume during the fetal period.Keywords: Testis, volume, fetal period, stereologyTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 1999, 19:218-222
