The Value Of Endoscopy In Thediagnosis Of Nonerosive Antral Gastritis

The diagnosis of gastritis is frequently made endoscopically. In the present study, in order to assess the value of endoscopic examination as a diagnostic test for nonerosive antral gastritis, we analysed retrospectively a series of 354 cases undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Patients with other types of gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric or esophageal malignancy, prior gastric surgery were excluded. Endoscopic diagnoses were compared with histological diagnoses. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value of the endoscopy in the diagnosis of antral gastritis were found to be 67.5%, 37.5%, 95.8%, 5.2%, respectively. It is concluded that endoscopy alone has a limited value as diagnostic test for nonerosive antral gastritis.Keywords: Antral gastritis, endoscopy, histology,
