The rats used in this study were divided into 4 equal groups called control, carnitine, exercise and carnitine+exercise groups.
3 ml of 0.9% NaCl were applied to both exercise and control groups. Same volume 0.9% NaCl with 300 mg/kg L-Carnitine were applied to carnitine and carnitine+exercise groups for ten days. Exercise groups were forced to swimming for 30 minutes following the injections.
Liver tissues were prepared, stained and examined using a light microscope. We did not observe any significant difference among the groups when the sections were stained with Haematoxylen-Eosin method. When Best Carmin staining were applied to the sections, considerable glycogen granules were observed in other groups but not in exercise groups. Statistical evaluation supports this result (p<0.01).
We have taken serum samples. Free carnitine levels were significantly low in exercise groups and in other groups it was within normal region.
In the literature body glycogen reservoirs is preserved with treated L-Carnitine in intensive muscular exercise. In our study we observed that intensive muscular exercise decreased free carnitine levels in serum and decrease liver glycogen, reservoirs is preserved by L-Carnitine treatment. Keywords: L-Carnitine, Liver, RatTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 1999, 19:209-214
