Cerrahi Kliniği, Klinik Şefi, ANKARA Patients with primary liver tumors (hepatocellular carcinoma) who had been applied intraarterial catheterization and intraarterial chemotherapy between 1991-1997 were analyzed retrospectively. There were 7 female and 8 male patients. 15 patients were catheterized, but 12 of them could be evaluated for response. Two patients died in the postoperative period and 1 patient was out of follow-up. According to the percent of hepatic replacement of tumors 3 patients were evaluated as stage I, and 12 patients as stage II. Six of the catheterized patients received 5 Fluorouracil + Ca Folinate, and 6 patients received 5 Fluorouracil + Mitomycin C. Complications were detected in 5 (33.3%) patients, and toxic effects were seen in 41.6% of patients. From 12 patients who received intraarterial chemotherapy, 2 of them responded to therapy. Overall response rate was 16.6%, and the median survival was 13 months. These results were found to be similar with systemic chemotherapy. In conclusion, intraarterial chemotherapy for primary irresectable liver tumors was not effective as expected, and has a high complication rate. Keywords: Liver, Tumor, Intraarterial,
