*** Prof.Dr., Ankara Numune Hastanesi Endokrinoloji ve Metabolizma Kliniği, ANKARA The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship of medial arterial calcification (MAC) in diabetic patients with microangiopathic complications of diabetes mellitus. The study population included 33 Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus patients, 67 Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients and 50 healthy controls. MAC was diagnosed radiologically and diagnosis of nephropathy was made according to the presence of hypertension, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels and 24-hour urine albumin excretion (UAE) level. Retinopathy was diagnosed after an ophthalmological examination including electroretinography.
Of the Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients, 58.2% had microalbuminuria and of these, 20.5% had MAC with significant difference (p<0.05). In overall, the rate for microalbuminuria was 51% among diabetic patients and 90% of the patients with MAC had microalbuminuria also. The correlation between MAC and diabetic microalbuminuria was statistically significant (p<0.05). The overall retinopathy was 39% and of the patients with retinopathy, 20.5% had MAC (p<0.05). As a result, MAC had closed relation with the other complications of diabetes and we conclude that MAC is should be in mind as an indicator for microangiopathic and macroangiopathic complications of diabetes mellitus. Keywords: Diabetes mellitus,
