*Yrd.Doç.Dr., Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Anatomi AD, ISPARTA Assessment of the position and size of the sagittal suture and anterior fontanel is important in the routine examination of fetuses within the fetal period and newborn infants. The aim of this study was to establish normal values of the sizes of the sagittal suture and anterior fontanel for human fetuses during the fetal period. Fifty one cases were examined over a developmental period ranging from a fetus of 14 weeks gestation to full term neonate. The width and length of head and head circumference of all fetuses were measured. The sagittal suture and anterior fontanel sizes were determined. The distance between upper angle of anterior fontanel and upper angle of fonticulus posterior were also measured. The distance between bregma and lambda, and nasion and inion were measured. The means of all the parameters were evaluated in terms of gestational ages. Significantly correlation (p<0.001) was found between all parameters and gestational ages, and between the sagittal suture and cranial measurements. There was no correlation between the sagittal suture and the measurements of anterior fontanel (p>0.05). There was no difference between male and female in all parameters (p>0.05). The presence of the wide sagittal suture should be examined carefully in terms of defects and anomaly. We hope that the measurements of the sagittal suture and the correlation between the sagittal suture and anterior fontanel may contribute the studies on this area. Keywords: Sagittal suture, Fetal period, MorphometryTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 1999, 19:309-314
