** Prof.Dr., Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları AD, İZMİR Cholestasis is defined as a pathologic state of reduced bile formation or flow. Impaired bile flow is characterized by an accumulation in the liver and serum of substances that normally are secreted in the bile, such as bilirubin, bile acids and cholesterol. Neonatal cholestasis is classified as obstructive and hepatocelluler cholestasis. Genetic and metabolic disorders, persistent intrahepatic cholestasis, hepatitis can cause intrahepatic cholestasis. Biliary atresia is the most common cause in extrahepatic cholestasis. Bile retention and regurgitation into serum, malabsorption, portal hypertension lead to serious and life-threating complications. In this paper, causes, consequences and treatment of neonatal cholestasis are presented. Keywords: Neonatal cholestasis, Cholestatic jaundiceTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2000, 20:178-186
