*** Prof.Dr., Atatürk Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Nöroşirürji AD, ERZURUM In this study, 128 patients with cerebral abscess operated in our clinic between 1988 and 1998 were investigated retrospectively.
The most common cause of the brain abscess was direct spread of infection from neighbouring structures. Headache, fever, nausea and womiting were present in the most of cases. The diagnosis was based on the clinical history, physicial and neurological examination, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and angiography.
According to the surgical treatment they received, the patients were divided into three groups as excision (n= 23), aspiration (n=74), exsicion following aspiration (n=31). Mortality rate was 10.9%. The most important causes affecting the mortality was impairment of consciousness of the patients in the preoperative period. Keywords: Brain Abscess, CT, Surgical treatment,
