*** Prof.Dr., GATA İç Hastalıkları BD, ANKARA Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are family of proteins with diverse functions, whose common features that they are produced when a cell is exposed to environmental insults such as a sudden change in temperature, anoxia, reactive oxygen metabolites or altered glucose levels. Heat shock proteins are a group of proteins produced by cells of all species in response to a variety of stressful stimuli. They are highly conserved between prokaryotes and eukaryotes and consequently the host immune response, initially directed against bacterial HSPs could become redirected against its own HSPs. Human synovial T cells frequently recognize Mycobacterium tuberculosis 65kDa HSPs, and antibodies against this antigen are frequently elevated in the blood. Keywords: Heat shock proteinsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2000, 20:187-195
