Investigation Of The Effects Of 5-flurouracil Onantioxidant Enzyme Activity In Rabbits

This study was performed on the New Zeland rabbits (albino type) with the weight of between 2300 and 2500 g. The rabbits were devided into four groups, and every group consisted 7 rabbits. Isotonic NaCl was applied to the Group I, 5-FU was applied intraperitonealy one a day for five days at 0900 with the following concentrations, 5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, for Group II, Group III, and Group IV, respectively. In all groups, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activities and erythrocyte malondialdehyde (MDA) leves were studied. It was observed that while 5- FU doses were increasing, erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme activities were significantly decreased; however, erythrocyte MDA levels were significantly increased. It has been thought that oxidative stress occured by 5-FU depresses antioxidant defense system, but increases lipid peroxidation.Keywords: 5-Fluorouracil, Erythrocyte,
