** Doç.Dr., SB Ankara Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Nöroloji Kliniği Şefi, ANKARA Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) is a rare entity. CPM is characterized by demyelination. CPM may also be found at extrapontine localisation; such as thalamus, subthalamic nucleus, striatum, internal capsule, amygdaloid nucleus, corpus geniculatum laterale, white substance of cerebeller folia and deep layer of cerebral cortex. The most common causes of CPM are hyponatremia and rapid correction of this pathology. CPM may be seen together with chronic renal insufficency, cancers, infections, malnutrition, hypoxia, cachexia and alcoholism. Our case is a 45 years old alcoholic male patient. CPM with hypernatremia and hypopotasemia were diagnosed. As CPM with these type electrolites disturbances are rare, it is presented. Keywords: Central pontine myelinolysis, EtiologyTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2000, 20:235-238
