The Clinical And Biochemical Effects Of Cigarette Smoking

Smoking leads subjects to be dependent via the effects of nicotine, which is the basic constituent of cigarette, on central nervous system. Cigarette not only leads to bad appearance of mouth and teeth, but also increases the risk of pharynageal, laryngeal and esophageal cancer. The healing of surgical and traumatic wounds delays in cigarette consumers. About 30% of deaths due to coronary heart disease or cancer and 80% of lung cancer cases are associated with cigarette smoking. The risk and formation of chronic obstructive lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema is also very high among smokers. It has also been reported that consuming one cigarette leads to an average of 5 ½ minutes reduction in life expectancy.
Besides cigarette smokers, passive smoking subjects are also exposed to harmful effets of tobacco.
When the therapy cost of diseases, the cost of cigarette and early mortality caused by smoking are taken into consideration, cigarette smoking is a harmful habbit effecting both individual and social economy.Keywords: Smoking, clinical and biochemical effectsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2000, 20:306-312
