About half of its dry weight consists of some proteins and the remaining half consists of fatty acids, vitamins and some important minerals.
This study was planned to investigate the effects of royal jelly, which has been widely used by population in recent years, on serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
The present study was performed on 15 healthy volunteers with an age range of 35-50 years. Royal jelly was given orally as 100 mg/day (the recommended dose proposed by the manufacturer), 15-30 minutes before breakfast for 4 weeks. Blood samples were collected before royal jelly use and at the end of a-4-week royal jelly use. Serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels were determined with commercially available kits (Boehringer Mannheim) by the spectrophotometric method in an autoanalyzer (Hitachi 717).Serum cholesterol levels before and after royal jelly use were 229.46 ± 42.78 mg/dL and 206.69 ± 36.48 mg/dL, respectively (p<0,001). On the other hand, serum triglyceride levels were 216.84 ± 80.81 mg/dL and 134.69 ± 74.14 mg/dL, respectively (p<0,001).
In this investigation, as a preliminary study, it was found that mean serum cholesterol level decreased by about 10 % and mean triglyceride level by about 38% after a-four-week of royal jelly use. Keywords: Royal jelly, serum cholesterol,
