This study was aimed to investigate the value of prenatal ultrasonographic measurements of humerus as a predictor of in utero development and gestational age (GA), and to make a comparison between the data obtained by ultrasonography and dissection.
A prospective cross-sectional study of ultrasonography was conducted in 198 pregnant women with uneventful single pregnancies in the second and third trimester. GA was ranged from 14 to 40 weeks, and the relationships of humerus length with GA, femur length (FL), biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC) and abdominal circumference (AC) were evaluated. In addition, the humerus of the 100 fetuses aged from 13 to 39 weeks were dissected and their lengths were measured. The relationship of the results with GA was investigated. The results were evaluated using linear regression and correlation analyses in SPSS 6.0 computer statistic programme.
There was a linear relationship between the ultrasonographic measurements of the humerus length and the GA (R2 =0.93, P<0.001), the FL (R2= 0.97, P<0.001), the BPD (R2 =0.95, P<0.001), the HC (R2= 0.95, P<0.001) and the AC (R2 = 0.94, P<0.001). In order to investigate whether there is a difference in the growth rate of humerus length between the 2nd and 3rd trimester the fetuses were divided into two groups. The rate of increase of humerus length was significantly higher before 28 weeks of gestation with a correlation coefficient between humerus length and GA 0.95, which was 0.87 in later weeks. The humerus length measurements obtained by dissection were similar to those of ultrasonography. There was a linear relationship between the humerus length and the GA (R2= 0.87, P<0.001) and the correlation coefficients between humerus length and GA were 0.92 before 28 weeks of gestation and 0.64 in later weeks. When the ultrasonographic measurement of humerus length considered, the formula GA= 5.17This study demonstrates a high correlation between the humerus length, GA and other standard measurements of fetal growth, and suggests that humerus length measurement can be a valuable predictor of GA.
