*** Prof.Dr., Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Mikrobiyoloji ve Klinik Mikrobiyoloji AD, Ankara Purpose: Nipple discharge is one of the main findings of the breast diseases. In this study, 30 patients were searched if there was a relation with radiologic examinations and bacteriologic evaluations.
Instutition: University of Gazi, Faculty of Medicine, Dept.s of Microbiology & Clinical Microbiology and Radiology.
Materials and Methods: Mammography and ultrasonography were done by using a GE CGR 600 T and GE 3600 RT respectively. The samples collected for bacteriological examination were plated on the mediums; Triptic soy broth, blood agar, Eozin Methylen Blue agar. Disc diffusion method was used for antibiotic susceptibilty.
Results: The majority of the nipple discharges was serous (48%), bilateral (66%), provoked (82%) and had a history of more than 6 month. Out of 50 nipple discharges, bacteria could be grown in the samples of 33 patients. The 31 of them (94%) were coagulase negative staphylococcus and 2 were coagulase positive staphylococcus. Diphteroids were also grown in 3 of coagulase negative staphylococcus.
Conclusion: Patients with normal mammography and ultrasonography are not necessarily treated for coagulase negative staphylococcus or diphteroids but patients with coagulase positive staphylococcus should be treated by an appropriate antibiotic. Keywords: Nipples, Staphylococcus, Mammography, UltrasonographyTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:43-48
