**** Prof.Dr., Selçuk Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Tıbbi Histoloji ve Embriyoloji AD, KONYA The etiology of meningomyelocele is not clear. In our study, we investigated embryotoxic factor in order to contribute to the etiology. Serum; from six newborns aged 1-3 days; with meningomyelocele and from their mothers were collected under aseptic conditions. 20 µ1 of serum samples were injected to fertilized, 0. hour white eggs. Totally 114 experimental and 111 control eggs were used.
It was observed that in the experimental group, eggs showed a higher rate of embryo death and anomaly percentage. The observed anomalies were neural tube defect, gastrointestinal anomalies, chest and musculoskeletal defects and anophtalmus. In the experimental group also a slow development rate was observed. It is suggested that the possible cause of these anomalies may be a possible factor in the serum of meningomyelocele neonates or embryotoxic factor or factors transported from the mothers via placenta. Keywords: Meningomyelocele, Serum,
