Apoptosis
Ergin AYAŞLIOĞLU*
*Uz.Dr., SSK Ankara Eğitim Hastanesi, Mikrobiyoloji-İmmünoloji Bölümü, ANKARA In multicellular organisms, homeostasis is maintained through a balance between cell proliferation and cell death. Although much is known about the control of cell proliferation, less is known about the control of cell death. Apoptosis is a widespread and structurally distinct programmed cell death pathway by which damaged or unwanted cells are eliminated without causing inflammation. Aberrations in the mechanism of apoptosis are involved in the occurrence of congenital defects, malignancies, auto-immune disease, immune deficiency syndromes and degenerative conditions. Apoptosis is a complex process in which many regulatory mechanisms are involved. Today, a better understanding of apoptosis process and its mechanisms yields insights into the regulation of cell death during normal ageing and its role in health and illness. Keywords: ApoptosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:57-62
